Youth News

SAC 2008 Was filled with fun, Excitement and a whole lot of campers and Staff

155 campers and staff from our community and abroad came together for an amazing three weeks this past summer and had the time of their lives. Everyone bonded together in a unique Sephardic Jewish camping environment and made new friends while renewing relationships from the previous years.
Sephardic Adventure Camp is a summer overnight camping program which is coordinated throughout the year by a joint committee of Sephardic Bikur Holim and Ezra Bessarot members. We would like to thank each one of them for their love and dedication to our camp. They are: Michael Benoliel, Danny Jassen, Leah Gladstein, Simon Amiel, Cheryl Greene, Danny Alhadeff, Ilya Gamel and Jeffrey Solam. We would also like to thank Rabbi Simon Benzaquen, Rabbi Salomon Cohen-Scali and Rabbi Benjamin Owen for their involvement, consultation and support. Much appreciation goes to the fantastic staff assembled at SAC this year. We think they were the best we've ever had, and hope to have them all return for next year. We would especially like to acknowledge and thank Jeffrey Solam, Gail Ben-Meir, Naomi Solam, Ben Aaronson and Chelsie Russ for preparing and executing a tremendously successful camp this year. They are incredible leaders and role models for our children.
We at SAC know that this community camp which provides such an incredible experience would not be possible without the involvement and support of so many people and organizations in our community. We would like to offer our heartfelt appreciation to all those who donated their time, money and effort towards making SAC 2008 such a wonderful success. We thank our SAC partners for all that they do for us and appreciate their interest and continued support. The names are listed below.

Sephardic Religious School

The Sephardic Religious School is a supplementary school co-sponsored by Sephardic Bikur Holim Congregation, Congregation Ezra Bessarot and the SAMIS Foundation to provide Jewish education to those families who do not choose Day School Jewish education. These congregations represent those Jewish families who have immigrated to Seattle from Turkey, Greece, Morocco, Rhodes and Spain. Sephardic Religious School is the only "Sephardic" school serving the Greater Seattle Jewish Community. (The Seattle Sephardic community is the third largest in the United States.)

The Sephardic Religious School utilizes the Stroum Jewish Community Center classrooms and serves the children of both synagogues as well as families with other synagogue affiliations or no synagogue affiliation.

Our Sephardic culture is a rich culture that goes back in history over five hundred years. It is imperative that the Sephardic Religious Scholl transmit to our future generations its rich culture and heritage. Our purpose is to educate our children in Sephardic culture through a dual curriculum - Judaic Studies and Hebrew - and enrichment programming. The dual curriculum and enrichment programming helps the children to develop an appreciation for the rich heritage they will carry on. We continue to supplement the parents, as the child's primary Jewish educator and utilize parents as resources that can contribute to our children's Jewish education at school.

Our Sephardic Religious School High School Youth Program (SASSY) provides our Sephardic High Scholl youth with an opportunity to help them grow and associate within our traditional Sephardic Judaism. The Sephardic High School Youth Program serves Sephardic High School youth by providing social and educational opportunities regardless of affiliation and level of religious observance and welcomes other Jewish High School youth in the Greater Seattle area.
